Its most common symptoms are swelling, hardening, lumps, pain and color changes in the injected area, and in some cases joint pain or reactions in other organs. They can appear anywhere from weeks to 30 years after the injection. COFEPRIS, the Mexican health regulator, considers these substances a high health risk. The <a href=\"https:\/\/agepsa.cdmx.gob.mx\/comunicacion\/nota\/comunicado-de-riesgo-sobre-el-uso-de-sustancias-modelantes-o-no-autorizadas-para-rellenar-o-dar-volumen-en-alguna-parte-del-cuerpo-humano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexico City Health Protection Agency<\/a> also issued a risk notice.<\/p><p>Plastic surgeon Felipe Coiffman proposed the term <strong>iatrogenic allogenosis<\/strong> for the disease these materials cause in the body (<a href=\"https:\/\/scielo.isciii.es\/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0376-78922008000100002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coiffman, 2008<\/a>): the body recognizes the substance as foreign and reacts with chronic inflammation.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s2\">When symptoms appear<\/h2><p>One of the most important features is latency. In the experience of the <a href=\"https:\/\/scielo.isciii.es\/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0376-78922013000300009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hospital General de M\u00e9xico<\/a>, with 128 patients, symptoms appeared anywhere from weeks to 30 years after the injection. So anyone who had a substance injected to add volume, even long ago and without discomfort, should watch for any change.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s3\">Symptoms in the injected area<\/h2><p class=\"lead-a\">The most frequent symptoms appear where the material was injected.<\/p><div class=\"cols\"><div class=\"col no\"><h3>Most frequent<\/h3><ul><li>Swelling, redness or warmth<\/li><li>Hardening of the area<\/li><li>Lumps, nodules or irregularities<\/li><li>Pain to the touch or when sitting<\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"col no\"><h3>Signs of progression<\/h3><ul><li>Skin color changes (dark or reddish patches)<\/li><li>Migration of the material to other areas<\/li><li>Ulcers or wounds that do not heal<\/li><li>Fluid or material leaking through the skin<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><p>The most affected areas are the buttocks, legs, breasts and face, where these substances are most often injected.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s4\">Symptoms elsewhere in the body<\/h2><p>The reaction does not always stay at the injection site.
